Breathing Matters > How well do you breathe?

Lie flat on your back, with your legs bent upward at a right angle with your feet on the bed or ground relaxing your abdominal muscles. Bending your legs relaxes your abdominal muscles making it easier for the diaphragm to contract. Place one hand on your abdomen just below your umbilicus (tummy button) and another on your upper chest. If only the pump action of your diaphragm is working, only the hand on your umbilicus should be moving. A number of people, who chronically breathe in their upper chests, will be unable to do this exercise. If you are unable to breathe using your diaphragm, the techniques to help you are covered later in the book.
